How do you improve relationships in Wartales?

There are two main ways to improve relationships in Wartales which happen either in combat or in camp. Whenever two characters fight side-by-side in a battle, kill an opponent someone is engaged with, or heal a companion, they have a chance to improve their relationship. Then at night, when characters are sat with each other around the campfire, their relationships will slowly improve.

You will occasionally also get a campfire interaction event (a character will have a ? above them after resting) happening at the end of a rest at camp. These will give three options, which will sometimes increase relationships, while other options can open new traits (be careful, as traits can also be negative). If characters aren’t assigned to workstations, make sure the four campfire slots are filled.

Can you damage relationships in Wartales?

The only way to decrease the relationship between the two characters in Wartales is if something goes wrong on the battlefield. The most common ways for this to happen are from an Archer shooting a companion, accidentally damaging an ally with a two-handed weapon, or similarly from an AOE hit from a thrown item. Any of these can reduce their relationship status by one.

Relationship bonuses explained

If you want to check the relationships between your companions, open their character sheet and click the Relationships icon (a face with a green number on one side, and red on the other) in the bottom left of the box. Once a relationship is formed between two characters, they will receive bonuses when interacting in combat and in camp. There are three levels of relationship:

  • Likes: +1 bonus
  • Loves: +2 bonus
  • Adores: +3 bonus

Similarly, a negative relationship will create a penalty of -1 or -2.

Bonuses apply as extra damage in battle if friends are fighting next to each other, while in camp it can increase the yield from certain tasks. So, if two companions don’t like each other, keep them apart on the battlefield until their relationship improves. Also, note that when two companions have declared their love (adores) for each other you will receive the Souls Mates achievement.
