Should I choose OpenGL or not – Wartales

Open, or direct?

Tactical RPG Wartales has been well supported since its launch, with regular updates alongside the Pirates of Belerion DLC. But players who are playing on Steam are being asked on launch whether to start normally or use OpenGL since updating the game—so, should you choose OpenGL or not?

Should I use OpenGL in Wartales on Steam?

There is an ongoing debate as to whether DirectX or OpenGL offers a better graphic experience. As with many debates on PC, due to the many options in chips, graphic cards, and the rest, there is no right answer. However, the good news is you can change the settings at any time (see below). This means you can experiment with both and choose the graphics setting you prefer or is more stable.

During the game’s lifetime, it has had a variety of memory leaks, some of which affected one rendering system more than the other. During this time, OpenGL was reported to be more stable. To switch settings on Steam, do the following:

  1. find Wartales in your Steam Library.
  2. Right-click the game title and choose Properties from the menu.
  3. Under Launch Options, select your preferred option.
  4. Select OpenGL, or Ask when starting the game.

This allows you to switch back if you’re not happy with your current selection.

Generally, I’d suggest that when things are working fine, DirectX is the better option. However, if you are playing using a very old graphics card that’s no longer being updated, OpenGL often works better.
