PC RPG games like Wartales are always popular in the modding community. The game has masses of stats to tinker with, a large variety of characters and equipment, and a huge map. The modding opportunities it represents are only limited by the imagination, and as the game has been a big sleeper hit, I'm expecting some really interesting (and probably disturbing) things from the modding community. Below you'll find the best Wartales mods we've seen so far, with many sure to follow.
Wartales – Best PC mods
Below you'll find the best mods we've come across for Wartales to date, as voted for by the community that creates and uses them. It's important to note that mods are not directly endorsed by the creators of the game, and even if you follow all precautions, there is no guarantee that modding won't ruin your saved games or even damage your PC.
We have not tried any of these mods, so cannot personally verify their authenticity. If you use any of the mods below, you do so knowing that you are doing so completely at your own risk.
How to install Wartales mods on your PC
All of the mods you'll find listed below come from Nexus. It is essential that you back up two items from your Wartales installation folder before you attempt to install them. They will be in the folder [your Steam Library drive]>Steam>steamapps>common>Wartales:
- The res.pak file (it's very big) from the Installation folder
- The whole Save folder
Now simply download your chosen mod from Nexus Mods, extract all, then paste the new res.pak file into the Installation folder (where you copied the res.pak file from), selecting Replace when prompted. If anything goes wrong, you can replace the file you've placed from Nexus Mods with your backed-up original.
The five top Wartales mods
Note that, as you are replacing a single file, you can only have one of these mods running at any one time.
5. Half XP mod
This basic mod is very much a cheat mode, allowing your Wartales companions to go through the levels with only half of the experience points usually required. It's not exact, as the example used shows a character needing 500xp to gain a level rather than 980xp, but it's certainly close enough. This will make you very powerful very quickly, and you'll be able to equip some very nice gear in the early regions, as long as you can craft or find it.

4. Upgrade All mod
Not too much to say about this one, except that you can upgrade every type of weapon in the game by going to the Brotherhood Training Grounds scattered around the regions rather than just Legendary Weapons. This will be very useful for players who happen to have set their team up in a way that has many units using the same weapon type or who don't particularly like the abilities on some of the Legendary Weapons (some are a bit niche, in my opinion).

3. A la Carte mod
Rather than having to find recipes on vendors or elsewhere around the maps, all starting recipes will be automatically available for you to select in the Knowledge menus. This includes class specializations, mastery knowledge, meals, armor layers, camp gear, oils, and other apothecary items, tinkerer, and forge items. Some items may not be available until you have created a previous version, but this is a fantastic cheat for those who love crafting.

2. Mage DLC Mode mod
If you want to take the medieval edge off Wartales and make it a bit more fantasy themed, consider this mod that adds the Mage class. Choose from Priest, Warlock, Sorcerer, and Necromancer. They're fully fleshed-out classes that use Willpower as their main combat stat. It also allows you to have a healer for the first time since the official launch, thanks to the Druid. The mod includes class-based items such as Wands and off-hand equipment.

1. Champions of Wartales mod
This is a radical and ambitious mod. According to the creator, the idea is to play with four unique playable champions, which will reduce long and repetitive battles. This means shorter, deadlier encounters with fewer enemies, advanced skills, new classes, and new items. The mod comes with a short video showing one of the champions taking out several enemies in a single round due to both strong multiple attacks and movement, so if you want a more heroic feel to the game, it's definitely worth a look.
