Great news for Tomb Raider fans, as it’s been officially announced that the next Tomb Raider game will utilize the brand new Unreal Engine 5 as it's game engine. The news was unveiled alongside the official release of Unreal Engine 5 at the State of Unreal event, and with an official post on the Tomb Raider Twitter.
In the post, developers Crystal Dynamics outlined that it hopes the engine “will help us take our storytelling to the next level.” The next Tomb Raider game is an ambitious task for Crystal Dynamics, who in a January 2021 community update revealed its plan to “unify the timelines” of all the games.
The next Tomb Raider game is set to feature Lara Croft as a “seasoned adventurer,” although other story details are sadly lacking. However, the information that the game is set to be built using Unreal Engine 5 suggests we should expect more technical excellence in a similar vein to the 2018 Shadow of the Tomb Raider game.
In an accompanying video to the announcement, a Crystal Dynamics representative stated that “Our goal is to push the envelope of fidelity, and deliver the high-quality, cinematic, action-adventure experience fans deserve.”
Overall this suggests that the next Tomb Raider will use the full power of the new Unreal Engine 5 to deliver on those expectations.
