The Lightless Silk String, Lightless Eye of the Maelstrom, and Lightless Mass are Talent level-up materials used by various characters in Genshin Impact. They're dropped by the Weekly Boss called the All-Devouring Narwhal, which lives in the depths of Fontaine.
Regardless of whether or not you're building a character who uses any of these materials, I encourage you to defeat the boss once a week so you have enough materials by the time you need them.
Where to find the All-Devouring Narwhal in Genshin Impact
The All-Devouring Narwhal is a Weekly Boss that only unlocks after completing the Fontaine Archon Quest Chapter IV: Act V - Masquerade of the Guilty. Once done, the Shadow of Another World Domain will appear in the southern part of the Salacia Plain, beside the Pale Forgotten Glory Domain.
Enter the Shadow of Another World Domain to challenge the All-Devouring Narwhal and defeat it to claim random rewards (Lightless Silk String, Lightless Eye of the Maelstrom, and Lightless Mass) once a week.

How to defeat the All-Devouring Narwhal in Genshin Impact – boss guide & battle mechanics
While the All-Devouring Narwhal is a massive boss with an intimidating front, its battle mechanics are actually quite simple and not as gimmicky as the Sumeru and Inazuma Weekly Bosses. However, if you don't have an extremely strong hypercarry team, it can be tricky to defeat the boss within a reasonable time, so learning its mechanics will be very helpful nonetheless.
Party setup
The All-Devouring Narwhal has two forms split into three main phases: the giant whale and a Shadow (humanoid enemy) inside it. Keep the following Elemental weaknesses in mind:
- The whale has 70% Hyro RES.
- The Shadow has 70% Electro RES.
With that said, I wouldn't recommend having a Hydro or Electro main DPS, but you can certainly still have these Elemental applicators in the team. I suggest bringing in the following team members:
- Dendro, Pyro, or Cryo units to React with Hydro and Electro (Dendro is particularly good)
- Healer or shielder for survivability
- Archer for the first stage to quickly fill up the boss' rage meter (DPS not required; a healer or shielder archer works fine)
- Optional: Fontainian character who can deal Pneuma or Ousia attacks
If you don't like dodging, then I would strongly recommend bringing in a shielder instead of a healer, but make sure to stock up on HP recovery dishes. In addition, don't forget to consume damage-boosting dishes, such as the Delicious Chicken Tofu Pudding, to help with DPS.
Boss mechanics
Initial Whale Phase
At the start of the battle, you'll face off against the whale. The only goal is to fill up the rage meter (where the arrow is pointing) by barraging it with attacks. The attacks don't need to deal real damage—as demonstrated above. Use an archer to quickly fill up the rage meter, as the whale is too far for most close-ranged units.
Once the rage meter is filled by about 75%, the whale will disappear and summon an Eye of the Maelstrom, as pictured above. Attack it using Normal Attacks eight times or using a Pneuma or Ousia Attack once. After doing so, the whale will reappear and swallow you whole, a la Noah's Ark.

Shadow Phase
Once you've been swallowed by the whale, you'll engage in battle with the Shadow (humanoid enemy). In this stage, your goal is to completely destroy its shield. It's not an Elemental-specific shield so any Reaction will work against it, but keep in mind that it has a 70% Electro RES.
The Shadow will barrage you with powerful attacks, but they're not difficult to dodge. For quality of life, I highly recommend bringing in a shielder so you don't have to think about your HP.
At certain points in the battle against the Shadow, it will "charge" up its attacks by transforming into an Eye of Maelstrom. During this period, you can interrupt the charging phase by using a Pneuma or Ousia Attack. Upon interruption, the Shadow will lose 25% of its HP.
If you fail to interrupt the Shadow, it will barrage you with powerful summons, including Geovishaps, Consecrated Fanged Beasts, Hat Jellyfishes, or a finishing attack. The summons are simulated, so you won't have to kill additional enemies. They're not particularly burdensome but deal a lot of damage. You can easily avoid them with a shield or great dodging skills.
Finishing Whale Phase
After depleting the Shadow's shield, you'll have a few seconds window to drain its HP by as much as you can before being teleported back to the outside world, where you'll face off against a weakened whale.
The whale will fall to the ground, allowing you to barrage it with attacks and deal as much damage as possible to deplete its HP. Keep in mind that the whale has a 70% Hydro RES.
If the whale is not defeated after some time, you'll repeat the same process in this order:
- Wait for the whale to swallow you. This time, there's no rage meter and Eye of Maelstrom, so it's just a waiting game.
- Deplete the Shadow's shield.
- Deal damage against the weakened whale until it's defeated.
If you manage to get swallowed twice, you'll unlock the Wonders of the World Achievement called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Spend 30 to 40 Original Resin at the end of the battle (depending on how much discounts you have left for the week) to claim rewards. You can challenge the All-Devouring Narwhal as many times as you like but can only claim rewards once a week.
