While players' swimming ability has always been less than favorable, years of calculating swimming Stamina and topping the leaderboards in the most drowns have paid off. Genshin Impact's nation of justice, Fontaine, allows you to dive underwater, expanding your swimming portfolio to include diving and underwater combat.
Here are all the basics you need to know about Fontaine's unique underwater exploration mechanic so you can begin diving into the deep blue.
How to go Underwater in Fontaine – Genshin Impact
Before diving into the massive ocean surrounding Fontaine, open the Settings menu and check your Key Bindings. Each device will have a different control for switching between walking and running, so use whatever key you've mapped for the walk/run switch to dive underwater. For example, Dive is handled by the Left Ctrl button by default for PC.
Head to any deep body of water within Fontaine to start swimming—shallow bodies of water don't count! Once you're swimming, activate the run/walk switch to dive and enter the region's underwater world. Diving for the first time will reward you with the Wonders of the World Achievement called Waterworld Future.

While underwater, the controls are similar to Sorush. Use the following controls to maneuver:
- Jump button - swim upward
- Walk/run switch - swim downward
- Interact button - pick up objects and unlock Waypoints
You can check the bottom right of the screen for the exact keys to press depending on your device and key bindings.
How to Defeat Enemies Underwater in Fontaine – Genshin Impact
Fontaine's underwater is rich in friendly marine life, but there are also a lot of enemies that can get in your way. Traditional skills are not applicable, so it doesn't matter what character you use for exploration. However, I recommend using characters with high HP to avoid dying.
Your characters will be weak by default. To become stronger, look for creatures with blue icons above their heads, which indicate skills you can absorb to make combat easier. (Every marine creature will have a different skill, depending on the blue icon above their head.) Click and hold the Normal Attack button to target a creature, then release it to absorb its skill.
The skill you absorb will replace your Elemental Skill, and can be activated using the same button. When attacking enemies, use the Elemental Skill button whenever possible to increase your damage output. You can change the skill you absorb at any time, but you can only have one at a time.
