Final Fantasy XIV has become the most profitable Final Fantasy game of all time, despite its rocky beginning. It's a success story that any franchise would want. Thanks to its consistent support and updates, the game continues to thrive. Final Fantasy XIV's beloved expansions keep filling the expansive MMO with even more content.
Every Final Fantasy 14 Expansion, Ranked
We've decided to rank the released expansions based on quality and impact to Final Fantasy XIV. We've compiled a list of each expansion in Final Fantasy XIV below and ranked them from worst to best.
4: Stormblood
While Stormblood is technically the worst expansion on this list, it is by no means terrible. Stormblood introduced fan-favorite classes Samurai and Red Mage and raised the level cap to 70 when it launched in 2017. The weakest part of the Stormblood expansion is the story, though. Many players found the campaign centered around the liberation of Ala Mhigo to be monotonous and a far cry from the game's other expansions.
3: Heavensward
Heavensward, Final Fantasy XIV's first expansion, set the MMO on fire when it launched in 2015. While A Realm Reborn rebuilt the game into an enjoyable MMO with tight controls and an addictive leveling system, the story was not masterful. Square Enix would eventually cut down drastically on some content in the base game's story quests with dozens of fetch quests and content players deemed filler. Heavensward, on the other hand, has been praised by critics and players alike for its revolutionary story and fascinating characters. Couple this with the increased level cap jumping to 60 and added classes in the Dark Knight, Machinist, and Astrologian, and you've got one incredible first expansion.
2: Shadowbringers
If Heavensward was incredible, then Shadowbringers is a masterpiece. Expanding on the story of the Warrior of Light, players find themselves in a strange and mysterious land filled with new and exciting characters. Shadowbringers has the best villain the MMO has seen yet in Emet-Selch. Not only does Shadowbringers have the best campaign in Final Fantasy XIV, but its story rivals that of other numbered entries in the Final Fantasy franchise. With a new level cap of level 80 and the new Gunbreaker and Dancer classes, players can further expand their arsenal of jobs and classes to play.
1: Endwalker
It's rare that a series in any medium is able to stick the landing and end a story well, but Endwalker managed to take plot threads that were started over a decade ago and wrap them up perfectly. Taking you on a truly epic adventure that pulls at your heartstrings and makes you feel like a true hero, Endwalker is the best expansion yet. What's more, with the Sage and Reaper classes added, revamped PvP, and a hugely expanded trust system, it's left the game in one of the best states its ever been in.
