Find out all the secrets of the world!

Final Fantasy XVI is the newest iteration in the legendary franchise. The new title introduced many exciting features, such as overhauled graphics and a live-action combat system, but also brought us many new secrets and ambiguous references. Being a dedicated completionist, I always search every nook and cranny in the game, not wanting to miss any easter egg the developers have treated us with. This article covers all secrets I've discovered in Final Fantasy XVI so far.

Final Fantasy XVI Secrets and Easter Eggs, revealed

FF16 features many secrets and Easter Eggs that players will likely miss on their first campaign playthrough. Aside from having several missable trophy quests and weapons, which you can easily pass by if you advance the game's main story too far, there are also important in-game resources that allow you to craft powerful, game-changing items.

All Final Fantasy XVI Easter Eggs, revealed

FFXVI also includes multiple easter eggs and references to the previous titles in the franchise, which has become a norm now. Numerous references have been made to remind the players of the series' old FF traditions and recurring elements. Small details such as that may go unnoticed or even seem out of place for those that never played the previous games, but I really liked seeing some of them and being subtly reminded of all those details that made us love this franchise.

Bearer's best friend

Torgal makes for a great companion of Clive in FFXVI, aiding him in combat and providing him with company. Ever since seeing him as a small pup for the first time, I wondered if I could pet Torgal in-game, only to find out that by doing so, I could unlock one of the trophies. Clive's Dog Whistle is the most exciting familiarity that took me back to the days of playing Final Fantasy X. It wasn't until later did I find out for sure that the sound of the whistle was the very same sound sample used by Tidus when teaching Yuna how to whistle.

Whispers of the past

Another blast from the past happens during the Homecoming Main Quest when Clive visits Martha's Rest. Only the most astute players will notice a lonely scarecrow that looks peculiarly like Final Fantasy 9's most lovable character Vivi Ornitier. A black mage wielding pretty nifty powers, Vivi was one of the most memorable characters, thanks to his tragic past and coming-of-age story, which left many players in tears.

Just another Spoony Bard

This reference goes back to the earliest days of Final Fantasy when it was just another Dungeons & Dragons-inspired RPG. Tellah's famous roast of Edward the Prince is probably the most memorable Quote of Final Fantasy 4, later on becoming a staple joke for all bards, especially in the Final Fantasy franchise. As a remembrance of the franchise's past, an NPC called Spoony Bard can be found in the Hideaway, playing his lute.

Final Fantasy XVI secret ending - does it exist?

While Final Fantasy XVI does not include any hidden endings, many fans of the series have wondered if there is a secret ending in the game that can somehow be unlocked, providing an alternative to the conclusion of Clive's story, or perhaps elaborating it further. Without entirely spoiling the finale, staying true to the franchise's complex storytelling, the true meaning is hidden within the symbolism and subtle hints rather than explaining the ending piecemeal for the players to enjoy.

Secret and missable Final Fantasy XVI weapon and items

FF16 Gotterdammerung sword

One of the most desirable unlocks in FFXVI is the sword called Gotterdammerung, the twilight of the gods. Players can unlock it by completing all four Blacksmith's Blues Side Quest parts. Being on your smithy's good side is always a reasonable decision. In this game, it really pays off; you'll be rewarded with a sword only rivaled by the Ultima weapon, a sword you need to finish the game and start a New Game+ to craft.

The main confusion came from players accidentally selling some vital components, not knowing they would need them later to make the sword. Because you get the sword's blueprint only after you finish all four chapters of the Side Quest, you wouldn't normally know which resources you'd need to craft it, making the Gotterdammerung an easily missable item in Final Fantasy XVI.

Getting your own Chocobo in FF XVI

Another completely missable and not very well-known fact in FF16 is that you can get your own Chocobo called Ambrosia in the White-Winged Wonder side quest. Upon completion, you will be rewarded with your personal mount that you can call upon from anywhere in the world, provided you're not in a town or in a Hideout.
