Elden Ring's story takes place in the Lands Between, ruled by Queen Marika the Eternal. Thanks to the intervention of Marika and her offspring, the Elden Ring has shattered. The Elden Ring is the source of Erdtree, and with it destroyed, the barrier between life and death no longer functions, and people can no longer die.

Queen Marika's children, the demigods, all hold a shard of the Elden Ring, known as the Great Runes. Each of the Elden Ring shards holds hidden power that has strengthened these demigods, making them much more powerful, but the power drove them mad in the process. Queen Marika and her children started The Shattering: a great war that ravaged the Lands Between.

The Tarnished aims to reunite the shards of the Elden Ring and become an Elden Lord, repairing the damage done by Queen Marika and her spawn.
