How to make a tavern in Dwarf Fortress

All work and no play makes miners very, very upset.

It's important to have a balanced life, even in simulators. Though most of Dwarf Fortress is spent engaging in work, creating a respite for your dwarves to socialize, relax, and drink is important to ensure their continued survival. Here's how you can make your own very own tavern for your team of dwarves.

Building a Tavern in Dwarf Fortress

Before you can build the tavern itself, you'll need to dig a large enough room to fit a stockpile, chairs and tables, a chest, and enough floor space for people to comfortably navigate. While you're digging this space, you'll want to consider also digging out a smaller room attached to the larger tavern that can serve as a dormitory where those who have imbibed just a bit too much can sleep the effects away.

After you've dug out the rooms, you'll want to smooth them to improve their quality before placing two doors to connect the dorm to the tavern and the tavern to the rest of your fortress. Once this is complete, you can begin furnishing your tavern.

Furnishing the Tavern

There are specific requirements when it comes to furnishing both the tavern and the dormitory. Build four to six beds for the dormitory and place them inside the room. Don't worry about adding too much else to a dormitory, as they don't require as much as bedrooms. As for the tavern, you'll need at least 10 tables, a chair to match, and one chest to start. You'll want to fill the chest with rock mugs so the dwarves will have a tool to drink with. Finally, you'll want to build a food stockpile to add to the tavern.

Once your tavern and dorms are outfitted to your satisfaction, it's time to zone the tavern as a meeting area. Click the zone icon on the screen before selecting meeting area and highlighting the tavern. This will give you a list of details about meeting area zones. Click the shield with the plus sign and select new inn/tavern to designate your new space as a tavern and give it an awesome name to celebrate.
