The Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) update is not just a patch for the existing game but rather a whole new game that is added to the CoD app. The update includes the MW3 multiplayer component, which is a separate game from Modern Warfare 2 (MW2).

Another thing that makes the update size for Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) so large is the Carry Forward system. It enables players to preserve their old inventory items and weapon progression from last year’s title.

This inventory requires file downloads during installation, so the weapons, Operators, and other MW2 content are available within Modern Warfare 3 (MW3). On top of that, a few Modern Warfare 2 maps that Carry Forward to the Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) multiplayer rotation will also require storage space.

The developers of CoD have stated that they are working on reducing the size of future updates and optimizing the game for different platforms. They have also explained that the update size may vary depending on the platform and region and that some users may see a smaller download size than others.

How can you free up some space?

To manage your game content, go to Call of Duty HQ on your platform and select the ‘manage files’ section. You will see different sections for Modern Warfare 3 (MW3), Warzone, and Modern Warfare 2. Each section contains the modes that are specific to the corresponding title. For instance, you can find Campaign and Multiplayer (with Zombies) modes under Modern Warfare 3 (MW3).

This menu lets you uninstall content that you don’t play anymore and free up some space. To remove files for a mode that you have completed, go to Call of Duty HQ settings on your platform and select ‘manage files’.
