You can unlock the Katana by getting five kills with a Melee weapon in 15 different matches. As the unlock challenge implies, you can equip any Melee weapon of choice and start getting kills in Vanguard Multiplayer or Warzone.

There have been complaints about this challenge not tracking properly. If you are facing the same issue, there is a workaround that you can try. You can unlock the Katana in Vanguard Zombies by getting five rapid kills with a Melee weapon during 50 different portal objectives.
