While much of Baldur’s Gate 3 is centered around its fantastic tactical combat and the various quests and NPC interactions the game throws at you, it also has its fair share of tricky puzzles to solve. Whether it's how to disarm a trap or pass through a door, you often have to think outside the box or listen carefully to the dialogue you get when interacting with objects or people. Early on, one of the trickiest puzzles I found was how to open the Gilden Chest of Selune in the Owlbear cave. Here’s how I did it.
BG3 Gilded Chest of Selune - How to open it
While it may be different for you, I came across the Owlbear Cave after visiting Emerald Grove and then starting to head west toward a variety of quest locations. You’ll likely meet a group of three NPCs en route. Follow them to the cave, or see my map above. As you enter the cave, there is a short path on the left before you get to the owlbear. Take this path, climb down at the end, and you’ll be in a small cave with a blue glowing chest and a statue. To open the chest, you need to read a prayer in the right spot, removing the magic protection on the chest.

The prayer you need to read is behind the large statue facing the chest. I highly recommend saving your game at this point, as you need several roles to go your way if you’re going to get into the chest. Now jump across from next to the chest to the small area behind the statue. There’s a book on the floor here, but also a prayer on a piece of paper. You’ll need one of your party members to successfully pass a Perception roll to spot it.
Once you see it, use any of your characters to examine it until one of them passes a Religion roll. NPC Shadowheart is a good choice here unless you’re also playing as a cleric. If all of your party fail their Religion roles, simply reload your save and try again until they do. Once passed, get the character that passed the role to pick up the note and jump back across to the chest.
Beating the trap on the Gilded Chest
Put the prayer note on the floor next to the chest, then use the NPC who passed the Prayer role to read it once more while it is on the ground. This will remove the magical trap from the chest. You’ll know the curse has been removed because the blue gilded chest will stop glowing. It is now safe to open and loot, which will net you a nice set of medium armor, The Oak Father’ Embrace, which will damage undead creatures that hit the wearer but strengthen beast attacks on them. It's a bit niche but very useful in undead dungeons.
