How to change appearance in Baldur’s Gate 3

Check out the new Tav.

One of the features I wanted most in Baldur's Gate 3 was the ability to change my character's appearance after character creation. The feature was not included at release but was introduced in Larian's Patch 3. With it, I can finally update my Paladin from his young look to include the wear and tear of his adventure. Let's find out how to change your character's appearance in Baldur's Gate 3.

How to use the Magic Mirror to change appearance in Baldur's Gate 3

Patch 3 for Baldur's Gate 3 introduced the Magic Mirror, which allows you to change your character's appearance. You can use the mirror to change your physical appearance, voice, and pronouns, but cannot change your race, body type, background, nor any consequences of the game, such as losing your eye or ingesting tadpoles. The Magic Mirror also cannot alter the Origin Companions, only your custom-created character.

Where to find the Magic Mirror in Baldur's Gate 3

The Magic Mirror can be found in your camp in Baldur's Gate 3, but it might be tucked away. When I made camp, I searched and searched for it, but it was hidden up a hill near Withers. You'll be able to spot it, as it is a glowing blue mirror standing at head height. Depending on where you make camp, the mirror's location can change. However, you can see how out of the way it was for me.

Why doesn't the Magic Mirror work in Baldur's Gate 3 - How to fix

Many players are reporting the Magic Mirror is not working, preventing them from changing their appearance. The common problem seems to be mods, meaning you cannot use the mirror if you have mods installed. With the new patch, this is not surprising, and you may need to disable your mods until they are updated to the newest version of Baldur's Gate 3.

We tested the Magic Mirror with and without mods, and playing without mods caused no issues with changing our appearance. If the problem persists—or occurs without mods—try verifying your local files or even uninstalling and reinstalling.

  • How to remove mods in Baldur's Gate 3
    • Go to AppData/Local/LarianStudios/Baldur'sGate3
    • Open your Mods folder.
    • Delete all files.
    • Launch Baldur's Gate 3

You can follow Larian's Support thread to keep on top of this issue and others with Patch 3 for Baldur's Gate 3.
