For those inspired to dabble in the ways of Necromancy, the Staff of Cherished Necromancy is the single most important piece of loot you can obtain to further your study. A weapon designed purely to harness the full potency of Necromancy, it is irreplaceable. Getting your hands on it is somewhat simple, but it is possible to brick any possibility of obtaining it. Here's how to get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy in Baldur's Gate 3.
Staff of Cherished Necromancy Location in BG3
In order to get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy, you must reach Baldur's Gate 3's third act first. If you've done so, then you must find and slay Mystic Carrion, an all-powerful Mummy Lord hiding out within the city of Baldur's Gate. He can be found within Philgrave's Mansion (X:9, Y:159).
Mystic Carrion holds the powerful staff in his clutches, and the only way to loosen his grip is to kill him. This is easier said than done, however, because as long as his heart is alive, he cannot be killed permanently.
Upon first meeting, Mystic Carron will request you find his lazy undead servant, Thrumbo. Doing so is a requirement to get the staff because Thrumbo — unknowingly to him — has Mystic Carrion's heart inside of him. There are a couple of ways you can get access to Mystic Carrion's heart, but the easiest is to just kill Thrumbo and take the heart from his corpse. Place the heart on the ground and take a few steps back. Use a ranged attack or spell to destroy the heart, and Mystic Carron will become vulnerable to permanent death.
Now all that's left to do is put the Mummy Lord down for good. Killing Mystic Carrion will reward you with the Staff of Cherished Necromancy and the Crypt Lord Ring, the latter of which lets you summon a power mummy that will fight for you.
Both are great additions to any Necromancer build in BG3.
What is the Staff of Cherished Necromancy in BG3?
If you're curious about the staff, it is an incredibly unique weapon that allows you to cast Necromancy spells without expending skill slots. The staff has a mechanic called Life Essence, which is a stacking buff that appears on your character.
Every time you slay a foe with a health bar, you'll get one stack of Life Essence (this includes inanimate objects as well, surprisingly). Per value, you may cast a Necromancy spell at no cost. Note the level of the Necromancy spell does not matter, so feel free to invoke the deadly Spell Level 6 spell, Dethrone, at no cost at all to your resources.
More importantly, the staff allows you to cast limited spells like Animate Dead as often as you like, whenever you see fit. Gone are the days of being stingy with dead bodies and maximizing the effectiveness of each cast. With the Staff of Cherished Necromancy, raising the dead becomes an effortless part of your kit.
