Differences between Crisis Core Reunion and Crisis Core PSP

Crisis Core Reunion is a remake in the truest of senses. It retells the story of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII but remade the game to suit modern platforms. They’ve also fixed a ton of gripes people had with the original game. Below are all of the major differences between Crisis Core Reunion and the original Crisis Core for the PSP:

  • Graphics. Everything, from character models to maps, has been completely remade from scratch using Unreal Engine 4. Cinematics are also footage taken using UE4.
  • UI. Crisis Core Reunion has adapted the UI used in Final Fantasy VII: Remake.
  • Voices. In the PSP version, only a select number of cutscenes were dubbed. Crisis Core Reunion dubbed everything, even the NPCs you can talk to in the Shinra Building. The Japanese dub has kept its actors, but the English cast is the same people in Final Fantasy VII: Remake.
  • Music. While Crisis Core Reunion kept Takeharu Ishimoto’s scores, the mixes have been altered a little, similar to how Final Fantasy VII: Remake updated some of its music.

Gameplay changes to Crisis Core Reunion

Crisis Core for the PSP received mixed reception primarily because of one thing: gameplay. Crisis Core Reunion has bridged a lot of the original game’s shortcomings in terms of gameplay. Below is a list of the major changes:

  • You can now lock onto targets
  • Zack can sprint, making traveling much faster
  • Cinematics are now skippable, which is a huge relief since they appear all the time mid-battle
  • Items now have a sort function
  • You now know what Materia is produced before fusing them together
  • Non-cutscene dialogue can be auto-advanced
  • Limited control mapping.
  • Difficulty adjustment mid-game.
  • Other features that can be toggled in Crisis Core Reunion’s settings like camera distance.

In fact, Crisis Core Reunion borrows much of its customization features from Final Fantasy VII: Remake.

Does Crisis Core Reunion change the story?

As mentioned, Crisis Core Reunion is a faithful retelling of the original PSP game. If you’re expecting Final Fantasy VII: Remake levels of remake, it’s really not one. Consider it a more perfect prequel to Final Fantasy VII.
