Mojang removes Fireflies from the Minecraft 1.19 The Wild Update, for realism

You would not believe your eyes, no ten million Minecraft fireflies.

If you were looking forward to the glittering light of fireflies in Minecraft patch 1.19, the Wild Update, then there’s some bad news. Mojang confirmed yesterday (May 10) that fireflies would not be included in the 1.19 update. In an Ask Mojang video, a response to the question, “What happened to the fireflies and birch forests?” was given.

In the video, producer Anna Lundgren explained that real-world fireflies are poisonous to frogs and toads, and as a result will not be included. She further explained that this was brought to their attention by player feedback. Frogs will also eat tiny slimes from now on.

However, fans have expressed disappointment with the removal. And given a rather obvious solution to the developer: Add fireflies but don’t have frogs eat them. Lundgren did confirm that this isn’t a definitive end to fireflies, but they won’t be included in the Wild Update.

Fireflies were first introduced alongside frogs in a preview for the Wild Update as part of the 2021 Minecraft Live event. But as of yesterday, their removal has whittled down the number of additions included in the Wild Update. The video also confirmed that a number of other elements would also be delayed or not included in the 1.19 Wild Update, such as bundles, mud, goat horns, and birch forest changes.

Lundgren also clarified that the birch forest changes were just concept art and not a commitment to adding the feature, and they’ve not continued working on an update for the biome.
