How to complete the Locked Out quest in Winter Ember

Something feels off about this guy.

In Winter Ember, you play Arthur Artorias on a quest to seek vengeance for the murder of his family. Along the way, you will encounter various side quests that can earn you some extra gold or items. One of these is the Locked Out quest. This may leave you wondering how to complete the Locked Out quest in Winter Ember.

To initiate this quest, go to the back of the library in South Arangal. There you will encounter a man who claims he locked himself out and requests your help in getting back in. There are two ways to get into the library.

You can either craft a rope arrow and use it to climb to the second floor on the right side of the library. If you don't have the materials, you can also use the building to the right to gain access to the library. All you have to do is go to the second floor and jump across the alley through the window.

Once inside the library, we recommend you loot the place and explore it. First, you will need to find a Library Entrance Key. You should also find a room with a piano—remember this as it will be important. Once you have looted the place, go to the library doors and let the man in.

Upon opening the doors, the man will reveal he is a thief and double-cross you. He enters the library and then locks the door behind him. To complete the Locked Out quest, you will need to reenter the library and confront the man.

After the man locks you out, you will need to break into the library again. We originally used the rope arrow to get into the library, but the man had locked the window we entered through. So we used the building to the right of the library to reenter. It is possible that whichever entrance you use will be locked, so try the other if this is the case.

Once you have entered the library again, head to the piano room. You will arrive just in time to see the piano slide, revealing a secret stairwell, and the man descended down it. Unfortunately, the piano then closes up before you follow, leaving you to figure out how to open the piano.

Moving the piano in Winter Ember is a simple task, but it can be hard to determine how to do it. On the far wall facing the piano are several bookshelves. You need to pull the books out in the correct order to move the piano and reveal the staircase.

We have marked the order to pull the books in the image above. Interact with the books 1, 3, and 2 in that order. This will open the piano and let you chase the man. Head down and follow the path to confront the man.

When you do, you can either agree to split the loot and gain the skill token or take all the loot for yourself. We recommend splitting the loot and taking the skill token to upgrade your abilities. After deciding, you need to escape from the library owner without being seen. Simply sneak back upstairs and escape through a second-floor window.
