There are a lot of different mechanics that you will come across for catching and fighting Pokemon. One of them involves using special balms to help calm irritated Pokemon. This is an important part of the game's boss battle mechanics and one you need to be familiar with.
Balm seems to only appear in boss battles in the game and is used to calm angry Noble Pokemon. You will need to throw balm and hit the Pokemon with it, the same way you do with Poke Balls. The only difference is you will be dodging attacks while you try to throw them.

Balm can't be used once you enter battle, but your Pokemon can stun the Noble Pokemon so that you can safely throw more balms at it. There is a bar displayed at the top of the screen that lets you know how far along you are in the calming process.
It's pretty easy to hit Nobles as they are large, but getting too close to them or throwing without dodging will quickly cause you to blackout.
