Doing so is a low-cost way of raising the skill without having to waste items such as wood axes or fire axes. That said, you can craft a stone axe by using a tree branch, chipped stone, and either ripped sheets, dirty rag, or twine.
If you don't know how to get these resources, you can get both the tree branch and chipped stone you need by foraging. To get ripped sheets or dirty rags, you must rip up clothes, and twine can be looted from cabinets.
