Building and experience. Put in the simplest way possible, the best way to make every boss in Terraria beatable is through building and experience.
Building a boss arena in all the places you need to fight a boss can be a massive hassle. But if you're having difficulty with a boss, setting up a suitable boss arena is the easiest way to give yourself a better shot. And just straight-up experience with the boss (and the game, in general) can help just as much as any cheap trick or tactic.
Building a Boss Arena
A good arena allows for both vertical and horizontal mobility, usually meaning long rows of wooden platforms with some solid platforms at set intervals. Along these platforms, you can place a number of things that will give you an edge:
- Campfires and Heart Lanterns for health regen.
- Honey in shallow pools for advanced health regen.
- Bast Statue for defense.
- Garden Gnomes and appropriate Torches for the biome increase your luck, which also increases DPS.
- Heart Statues and Star Statues can be hooked up to timers or pressure plates to release hearts and mana stars, respectively.
- Sunflowers both reduce enemy spawnrates and increases movement speed.
- For magic users, Star in a Bottle's for mana regen.
And, as a few general things, some nice things to have nearby are a Crystal Ball (for magic users), an Ammo Box (for ranged users), a Bewitching Table, and the Nurse.
Here's a video from Zuzucorn that outlines the process of setting up a nice arena (with a little lava trap inclusion, should you like the idea):

Tips and Tricks
Here are a few useful strategies for making a boss fight a heck of a lot easier:
- Go a quick round with the Eye of Cthulhu and leave it's drops behind. Sure, this tip doesn't exactly help you if the boss you're trying to beat is the Eye, but for any other boss, this can be a huge boon. While it's loot may not exactly help, the huge mass of hearts that drop certainly will.
- Potions and food. Sure, potions are a nightmare to grind for at times, but the buffs they give can make or break a fight. But as for food? You can easily get some tier two food (out of three tiers) as early as when the Dryad spawns. Just but a million pumpkin seeds, plant those suckers, and make some delicious Pumpkin Pie once they've grown!
- Nurse spamming. It's expensive as heck, feels cheap to do, and sometimes you panic, fumble the menu, and you die anyways. But hey, if it works, it works.
- Try different accesory modifiers. If the boss is dying too slow, get Lucky (for crit) or menacing (for straight damage). If you're dying to quickly, get Warding. Try mixing and matching defense and damage modifiers to get the right mix of DPS and survivability.
- Get a good Summon. Even if you're not a summoner, get a summon weapon and use it. It might not be a ton of extra DPS, but every little bit counts.
- Just fight the boss. It sounds simple, and it is. Just fight the boss. Again. And again. And again. Learning a boss's mechanics and how to manipulate it's AI in certain ways are just as important as any gear you might equip.
