Phasmophobia is undoubtedly one of the best ghost-hunting games available, and there are various ways to make it more challenging, one of which is the Nightmare mode. This mode drastically changes the game and how the ghosts behave.
If you don’t know what this mode does or how you can unlock it, you are not alone, as it took me some time to figure it out. This guide will tell you what is the Nightmare mode in Phasmophobia and how to unlock it.
What does Nightmare mode change in Phasmophobia?
The nightmare mode is a difficulty level in Phasmophobia that the developers introduced for hunters who like to be challenged. This difficulty level brings many changes to your gameplay and makes it a lot more difficult.
Changes in van
The first thing you will notice is that the ghost board will not tell you how the ghost will respond, whether you have to be with everyone or alone to find it. You will also see random values on the Sanity Monitor and Site Activity Monitor instead of the actual values.
Changes in the map
When you enter the hunting area, you will have to find and enable the fuse box yourself, as it won’t be on by default. Many of the doors will also be open, along with a lot of uncommon ghost activities without any time for you to prepare a setup.
With all that, your sanity levels will drop twice as fast, and the medicine will only help you recover 25% of it. Additionally, you will have to be very attentive since the ghost will give you two pieces of evidence, and you have to figure it out with that.
Changes in the hunt
In Nightmare mode, the ghost can change its room, meaning you must figure out its favorite room again. Once the hunt begins, you will notice that most of the hiding locations are blocked, and you must try hard to find any.
The hunt also lasts longer than usual, and if the ghost kills your teammate, the time for the hunt will extend. All of that is hard, but the rewards might be well worth all your troubles as this mode gives you 4x rewards. But if you die during the hunt, you get 0% of the value of the used item.
How to unlock Nightmare mode in Phasmophobia
It’s easy to unlock the Nightmare mode in Phasmophobia, as you only need to reach level 20 to do that. This means once you are at level 20 in Phasmophobia, you will automatically have nightmare mode as a playable difficulty.
